If you live in Hull you will know that damp can be a real problem. Generally Hull is very flat and is only 2 to 4 metres (6.5 to 13 ft) above sea level which is why we rarely see cellars in this city. Quite simply, they would fill in with water! Now that Spring is on the way (fingers crossed) and things have started to dry out, now is the time to tackle any damp problems you have in your home.

Persistent dampness can cause prolonged damage to a house or home if left untreated. Before embarking on a course of damp treatment, you should carry out a complete risk assessment to make sure it is safe to do so. If you are unsure, contact a local damp course specialist to provide you with a report on the work needed and any safety measures that will need to be employed.

Rising damp

So what is rising damp? Rising damp is caused by a natural phenomenon called ‘capillary action’ and may be defined as the vertical flow of water up through a permeable wall structure in masonry and brick walls. The common causes are deterioration due to age and bridging of a damp course with internal concrete floors, renders or external paths and earth levels (a damp course is specifically designed to avoid the possibility of rising damp- it is built of a matter of course in all new buildings).

To prevent rising damp from occurring, a horizontal waterproof damp-proof course (DPC) should be inserted into the walls at a height above 200mm and above any adjacent ground level. This is to ensure that water doesn’t manage to gain entry to the building structure by persistent splash backs.

Also, a vertical damp-proof membrane or course should be installed between walls that are protected from damp, but are joined by other walls that are not protected.

If your property is more than 60 years old then it is quite possible that it doesn’t have any protection.

There are several types of damp-proof course that you may want to employ:

Chemical Damp Proof Course

A liquid chemical damp-proof course is the easiest solution. It involves injecting a silicone liquid directly into the wall to create a water-repelling barrier. It’s effectiveness can vary since it does not always manage to create a solid impermeable barrier every time and moisture may still pass through it. Alternatives such as a cream chemical damp-proof course can be more effective as this can reply water more easily than a liquid. Breeze blocks are not porous and do not permit the liquid to flow through them at all so a chemical damp proof course is not recommended here.

Solid Damp Proof Course

A traditional damp proof course is made up of a layer of solid, non porous material such as bitumen felt, polythene or copper sheet. A Solid damp proof course is thought to provide the most effective way of resisting water flow, but they are almost impossible to install in a wall once it has been built since removing the mortar coarse can destabilize the and considerations have to be made regarding internal pipes and wires. This therefore makes the option of a solid damp proof course only available to new build walls.

Porous Tube Damp Proof Course

Porous tubes are inserted into the mortar 200mm above ground level, which increases the rate of evaporation and therefore slow down the effects of moisture and damp from rising above that level. Even though this is cost effective it is less reliable than a chemical damp proof course as the holes are spaced apart and only serve to limit rather than fully prevent the rise of moisture.

Electro Osmotic Damp Proof Course

This is a very scientific approach; as electrically charged negative titanium electrodes are installed to draw moisture to them away from rising up the wall. A negative cathode is placed at the bottom of the wall and reverses the direction of the travel of water. As this is plugged into the mains, the whole system has to be earthed and can be quite expensive especially as we are trying to conserve energy in today’s climate.

Solid Floor Damp Proof Membrane

Solid concrete floors are very common especially in kitchens and extensions of old homes. Like any other masonry this can draw damp and moisture into the home, however can be treated quite easily with a damp proof membrane. Existing floor can be lined with a water proof barrier and sealed with heavy duty moisture-curing polyurethane before adding another layer of concrete over the top.

If you have any signs of persistant damp and want to call a specialist in Hull Damp Proofing then why not give Heritage Construction a call on: 01482 342167

Due to the recent cold snap, houses up and down Hull are facing damaged and broken guttering. Lingering snow, coupled with thawing and then refreezing has turned the roof lying snow into compacted ice, in many cases, shifting the snow on to the edge of the roof and placing excessive weight onto guttering systems.

As a result Hull residents are experiencing problems such as guttering which has buckled under the stress and in some cases been completely destroyed. Hull home owners may also be experiencing damp problems around walls and windows resulting from water escaping over the side of your gutters and down exterior walls, or problems resulting from blocked gutters by ice, leaves or nests. Cracked or burst down pipes and blocked drains all contribute to weathering of gutters and should be regularly checked before water damage to bricks and plaster occurs. If you require the services of a Hull guttering company make sure they offer the complete service and pay attention to detail such as installation of gutter guards and gutter shingles to protect from damaged guttering caused by blockages.

Take a walk around any housing estate and you will see an increasing number of homes with a conservatory. Conservatories are the new must have. So what is their attraction and why are people spending good money on buying them?

The plain answer is they look great and will enhance any property. They also add extra living space to the house. Some home-owners even use them as an extension of their living room.

A conservatory will especially come into its own during the summer. You can throw open the doors on a hot summers day and look out onto the garden while enjoying the cooling breeze. Or you can sit and relax there on a warm evening, read a book and enjoy a drink. If you are looking to make the most of your garden contact Heritage – the Hull conservatory company.
